Welcome to General Chemistry! Chemistry, science, and technology impact our lives everyday.  Advances in chemistry are leading to solutions to such problems as pollution, global warming, new energy sources, new diseases, and medical treatments.  Advances in chemistry can also lead to new problems.  It is important for you as a responsible citizen and voter to understand basic chemical principles in order to make informed decisions about factors affecting you and the world around you.

Course Description:

CHM 2045 receives 3-semester hours of letter grade credit.  It is the first part of a two-semester sequence in General Chemistry. Topics include advanced treatment of stoichiometry, atomic theory, chemical bonding, liquid, solid, and gaseous behavior, solutions and thermochemistry.  College level reading, writing and math skills are required

This is an asynchronous online course.  Course materials are available through the Modules in Canvas and are in order by chapter in the textbook.  You can work at your own pace, but the homework assignments and exams have set availability and due dates.

Prerequisites:

Passing grade in CHM 1025 and 1025L OR CHM 1032 and CHM 1032L OR satisfactory grade on the Chemistry Placement Test AND MAC 1105 – College Algebra

Co-requisite:

CHM 2045L General Chemistry I Laboratory (unless you have passed it with a satisfactory grade)

eText and Online Homework Access:

To enhance your learning experience and provide discounted access to the right course material, your course is part of an inclusive access model called First Day®. You can easily access the digital materials for your course right from Canvas.

You have the option to opt-out of this program in the LMS. However, please be advised it is NOT recommended that you Opt-Out, as these materials are required to complete the course. If you choose to opt out, you will be responsible for purchasing your course materials at the normal retail price

Textbook and Course Materials:

Canvas:

We will use Canvas, an Internet course management program.  Here you will find your grades, lecture slides, lecture videos, study guides, old exams, email addresses to communicate with me and other students in your class, and a class calendar, among other things.  You will also access your required online homework through Canvas.  I will also be sending you email and posting announcements through Canvas.  You are required and responsible for accessing Canvas and checking your email every week for announcements and messages.  I will be emailing everyone regularly with course information and updates.

Course Orientation Quiz:

You must complete and pass the Canvas Course Orientation Quiz by the first Tuesday after drop/add at 11:59pm in order to remain in the class.  You will be withdrawn from the course if this quiz is not completed on time.  The Orientation Quiz is worth 10 points (1.75%) towards your grade.

Course Discussion Postings:

You will be completing 4 course discussion postings in Canvas this semester.  The discussion posts will vary, but will explore topics in the course, their relationship to real-world topics, and your motivation for taking this course and strategies for success in Chemistry.  Each posting must be a minimum of 100 words and will be worth 10 points each, for a total of 40 points.

In addition, you will be responding to posts from your fellow students in this course.  You are required to respond to at least one other student post for each of the discussion postings.  Your responses must be a minimum of 25 words and will be worth 5 points for a total of 20 points.

Your discussion postings and responses together add up to 10.53% of your overall grade.

Online Homework in Mastering Chemistry:

Success in chemistry depends on practice.  The more practice problems you undertake, the easier it becomes to recall the concepts and calculations and apply them to new questions.  I use exams to probe your understanding of the concepts covered in the textbook and my videos.  I use the Mastering Chemistry online homework program to give you the opportunity to practice the problems to prepare yourself for the exams.  Assignments in Mastering Chemistry are due weekly.  To encourage you to work on the online homework problems to learn the concepts and prepare for the exams, you can earn credit towards your overall grade in the class by completing the online homework.  The homework counts as one exam grade and constitutes 17.54% of your overall course grade.  Unlike an exam, you get multiple chances to answer each question in the online homework and have access to resources while completing the homework, so your homework grade has the potential to be your highest exam grade!

Extra Credit:

For each chapter covered in this class there is a Dynamic Study Module available to you in Mastering Chemistry.  Dynamic Study Modules are multiple choice questions which help you review and refresh your memory of key concepts before the exams.  Dynamic Study Modules typically take about 30 minutes to complete – depending on how well you understand the material.

Everyone can earn up to 2 points extra credit for each Dynamic Study Module assigned, and everyone can earn full credit, even if you answer some questions incorrectly.  Incorrect answers do not count against you – you will be given the opportunity to answer a similar question for each incorrect answer to bring up your score.  You will lose credit only if you do not complete an assignment or if you miss the due date.  There are 12 Dynamic Study Modules assigned, so you can earn up to 24 points extra credit.

The Dynamic Study Modules are accessed through the My Lab and Mastering link in Canvas and will be due by 11:59pm the night before the due date of the exam that covers that chapter.  There will be no extensions on the extra credit Dynamic Study Modules; late work will receive zero credit.  The extra credit is applied to your test scores in Canvas, not the individual chapter scores in Mastering Chemistry.

I will not provide any other opportunities for extra credit.  Please do not ask.

Exams:

There will be three partial exams and a final comprehensive exam. Exams will be closed notes and closed book and will be multiple choice.  Exams will be timed and proctored using HonorLock.  You will need a webcam and microphone to use HonorLock.

There will be a 3-day period during which exams are available.  Exams must be taken during this 3-day window.  You only get one attempt on each exam.  You cannot retake an exam for a higher grade.  Be sure to plan ahead when you will take each exam and give yourself plenty of time to complete the exam before it closes.  The first 3 exams you will be allowed 80 minutes to complete the exam.  The final exam is comprehensive (covers chapters 1-11) and is therefore longer than the other partial exams.  For the final exam you will be allowed 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete.

The final exam is required and is worth one exam grade.  If you have an exam score which is lower than your final exam score, I will drop one lower exam score and replace it with what you earn on the final exam, so the final exam may count as two exams.

Exams will constitute 70.18% of your overall course grade.

Academic dishonesty on exams/quizzes will result in a grade of zero for all parties involved.
